The mall is a lifestyle hub for shopping and all other activities with friends, family and coworkers. More recently, it has grown into a gigantic structure, including a supermarket, cinemas, and luxury shops, often with dining and entertainment options. Huge structures spanning millions of square meters have become the hallmark of shopping mall culture in many countries. Giant shopping malls allow customers to get lost at home in an unrealistic world. Most of the world’s largest malls are located in Asia. The world’s largest shopping centers are listed below.
As of 2020, the world’s largest shopping mall is Iran Mall. Located in northwest Tehran, this massive structure covers approximately 21 million leasable square meters. It is a commercial, cultural and social center that includes commercial spaces including retail outlets, cultural facilities, recreational areas, a hotel and some parking spaces. The roof of the shopping center serves as a sports complex where people can do activities such as walking and cycling. There is also a tennis court, swimming pool and even an ice rink. This mall is expected to grow further in the coming years as there are places under construction.
South China Mall
South China Mall covers 7.1 million leasable square meters and was opened in 2005. The original aim was to attract 100,000 visitors per day, but the venue remained empty for many years. Until recently, after renovations and modernisations, the mall has seen a steady increase in tenants, including middle-class restaurants. The mall contains zones designed to resemble the world’s leading cities. These areas include a model of the Arc de Triomphe, as in Paris, and a model with a gondola, as in Venice.
Mall of İstanbul AVM
It covers 7 million square meters of leasable area. Besides the usual shopping options, there is a huge theme park inside the mall. It is the first of its kind in Turkey. It is home to some of the world’s leading brands and has more than 300 stores. There are several performance centers, a gourmet center, and an extensive shopping centre. It also hosts Turkey’s largest cinema center with 12 halls and a seating capacity of 3,050.
Another huge shopping mall in China is SM City Tianjin. It spans just over six million leasable square feet. It is home to more than 2,500 shops spread throughout the enormous complex. It consists of five different buildings, each named after the five traditional Chinese elements (Earth, Fire, Water, Metal, and Wood). It opened its doors in 2016 in the bustling Tianjin Airport Economic Zone.
Golden Resource Shopping Center
Golden Resource Mall has a total of 6 million square feet of leasable space and houses more than 1,000 stalls. Unlike other shopping centers, Golden Resource Shopping Center is located in the form of a six-storey building surrounded by apartments and offices. There are 230 escalators in total in this shopping center.
Thailand’s largest shopping mall is CentralPlaza WestGate, located in Thailand’s Nonthaburi Province, a suburb of the capital city of Bangkok. It has more than 5.9 million square feet of gross floor area consisting of multiple floors. It is considered South East Asia’s “Super Regional Mall” and was built as part of an effort to transform Thailand into a thriving regional mall. There are more than 500 local and international brands in this shopping mall, and there are more than 200 restaurants.
Located in the capital of Thailand, Bangkok, this mall is one of the largest shopping complexes in the region. CentralWorld Mall has 500 stores, 100 restaurants and cafes, and 15 cinemas. The shopping center also includes an ice rink.
